Emilia Romagna, 4 days, best: fall & spring
This might just be the best little getaway you didn’t even know you needed this fall. Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy. Four days are all it takes to feel like a new you. A fantastic boutique hotel in Parma serves as the perfect base for day trips to places that are incredibly diverse yet share one thing in common: they let you truly switch off. Here are my special tips for my special community. Feel free to follow in my footsteps…
The Base: Parma
This enchanting city, nestled in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna region, is a treasure trove of culinary wonders and cultural richness. From the world-renowned prosciutto and Parmigiano-Reggiano to the historic Teatro Regio, Parma is elegant, grand, and feels incredibly sophisticated with its butter-colored facades and quiet piazzas. We chose Parma as the starting point for this entire trip.
Travel Tips
Stay
Villino di Porporano, Parma
Pause, rest and enjoy. Just a few minutes outside Parma centro, this is the ultimate place to slow down. It’s an elegant, hidden countryside villa surrounded by a massive, blooming rose garden and a charming pool. The interiors are filled with antique furniture, warm terracotta floors, and soft linens. Outstanding Feature: The incredible breakfast served under the patio, completely made from local, organic ingredients.
Day trip 1: Fontanellato
18 km from Parma.
Perfect for a lunch stop just outside Parma. The historic village is built around the Rocca Sanvitale— an impressive medieval fortress surrounded by a water-filled moat. Under the arcades framing the castle, you will find excellent little spots to sit outside and eat. Outstanding Feature: The fortress houses Italy's only functioning 19th-century Camera Obscura (optical darkroom) and frescoes by Renaissance master Parmigianino. Lunch Tip:Trattoria del Teatro facing the square. Order the handmade, regional Tortelli al Culatello
Day trip 2: Colorno, the mini Versailles
15 km from Parma.
Moving away from the typical medieval stone towns, Colorno is all about grand, stately elegance. The undisputed heart of the place is the Reggia di Colorno—a massive, pastel-colored palace often called the "Mini Versailles" of Emilia-Romagna. Walking through its French-style gardens and quiet courtyards feels incredibly airy, light, and beautifully calm compared to the bustling city center. Outstanding Feature: The endless green alleys and fountain paths of the royal gardens.

Parma
Villino di Porporano, Parma
Right next to the Duomo, this amazing bistro hits the perfect balance between local tradition and modern extravaganza. They are widely celebrated for their Pan di 20—a light-as-a-cloud sourdough creation that serves as a canvas for creative toppings. Far from just simple plates, the changing menu features thoughtfully elevated regional classics and high-end pastry.
Near Modena
Arnaldo Clinica Gastronomica
This historic institution has held its Michelin star since 1959, making it a true legend. It’s an old-school culinary "clinic" where time stands still. While they are famous for their traditional rolling meat carts, the real magic lies in their handmade, paper-thin pasta made right in front of you.
Near Verona/Lake Garda
Ristorante Gatto Moro
On the way back north, take a short detour just south of Lake Garda to Borghetto sul Mincio. This riverside village is the setting for Ristorante Gatto Moro. Everything here is about simple perfection, but there is one absolute standout dish you cannot miss: Their homemade Tortelli di Zucca (pumpkin tortelli) tossed in rich melted butter and fresh sage. Absolute heaven.
